Formed by artist Jon Beinart in 2003, the beinArt Collective began as “an online community of strange and imaginative figurative artists” titled the beinArt Collective. Operating as an online gallery, it initially served as a platform to highlight the works of Jon alongside a small group of fellow Australian artists, before expanding to include hundreds of artists from around the world. In 2016, the beinArt Gallery opened as a physical space in Melbourne with the mission of providing a “curated space for highly skilled figurative artists with a shared fascination for strange and imaginative themes” that is dedicated to “showing internationally established artists with emerging talent” to help usher in the New Contemporary art movement into Australia. Throughout its existence, the annual Small Works exhibition has remained one of the most important and closest to the gallery’s heart.

Bringing together over 90 international artists working in various mediums to produce more than 160 different contributions, the 7th annual Small Works group show opens this Saturday, June 18th, and runs until July 10th. While many familiar artists and gallery regulars will be contributing, work will also be showcased by plenty of newer and/or lesser-known artists that beinArt is expecting to become future favorites. For a gallery built on the dream of providing a platform for new contemporary and pop-surrealist artists to come together and showcase their work in Australia and beyond, Small Works provides the ideal framework. While many group shows run with a hyperspecific theme, this one strictly limits the work to a size of 12″ by 12″ or smaller. As the gallery explains, Small Works “allows the Gallery to bring to you works from as many artists as possible in a single show” and is “a chance for artists to create art at a scale they might not otherwise use. It’s also a ripe opportunity to grab an affordable piece to add to your own collection.
