Pow! Pow! Worldwide describes itself as a “global network of artists” that “organizes gallery shows, lecture series, schools for art and music, mural projects, a large creative space named Lana Lane Studios, concerts, and live art installations across the globe.”  Their longest standing annual even — or “Pow! Wow!” — is Pow! Wow! Hawai’i, which takes place in Kaka’ako district of Honolulu over Valentines Day week each year and centers around more than 100 visual artists — both local an international –creating massive awe-inspiring mural works.  Other components exist within the festival, as well, but it’s the murals that get top billing.  It’s always exciting to see work created on such a tremendous scale from established, high profile artists to those just beginning to make a name for themselves, not to mention all of the collaborations that take place.  This year, the organizers have put together two additional exhibits in collaboration with galleries in the Bay Area and Southern California, respectively.  In contrast to the larger-than-life pieces that will be altering the landscape of Honolulu over the week, San Francisco‘s Spoke Art Gallery will be bringing with them a collection of works that are no bigger than a piece of notebook paper.

For the better part of the last decade, Spoke Art has been hosting an exhibit paying tribute to the creation process of the artists that are featured within it.  Co-curated by gallery founder Ken Harman and Sydney-based artist Rodrigo Luff, this year’s installment of The Moleskine Project will feature contributions from over 100 different artists working in disciplines that range from painting and illustrations to mixed media and papercuts, the uniting factor being their trusty moleskine sketchbooks operating as both their canvases and a point of inspiration. As a previous press release from a few years back explained, the broader intention of the show is to “[allow] viewers and artists alike to peek into the intimate realm of the art making process, each piece [playing] with the balance between refined finality and lingering thoughts yet to be completed.“  The 9th installment of The Moleskin Project will have its opening on February 11th and run through the 16th.  If you happen to be out in Honolulu, either specifically for Pow! Pow! Hawai’i, or otherwise, you’re going to want to make sure to swing by and check this one out.
