AMON TOBIN Crowdfunding ONLY CHILD TYRANT Project Via Bandcamp

A little over a month after returning from an 8yr hiatus w/a brand new album & his own label to release it, the producer offers a new LP under a new moniker

Coming off the heels of dropping his latest LP, Fear In A Handful Of Dust, at the end of April, Amon Tobin is already pushing another full-length effort, this time funding its physical release with a crowdfunding campaign.  After releasing his ISAM project a full 8 years ago and embarking on one of the most ambitious live tours that we’ve ever heard of — complete with live triggered visuals and mindbending projection mapping technology — the legendary producer retreated back out of the limelight, for the most part.  It’s not that he was completely inactive — he continued to offer up the occasional remix and even released a double album under his Two Fingers project — but a straight ahead Amon Tobin effort was nowhere to be seen.  As we’ve pointed out in the past, Tobin is like having a toddler in the sense that, whenever it seems a little too quiet, you can be sure that something major is likely going down.  The result of that hiatus was not only Fear In A Handful Of Dust, but in the electronic mastermind launching his own label, Nomark, in conjunction with the album’s release.  Now that everything is up and running, Tobin is continuing to hit the ground running with a second studio effort under the moniker of Only Child Tyrant.

Here’s what Amon has to say regarding the new LP, Time To Run:

“So over at Nomark we’ve been trying a few different things with releases. What’s been surprising in the best possible way is the enduring love out there for proper LPs. Really though. It’s been one of those where it turns out the things we love are what you want too. Brilliant. Now, we’re a tiny operation and the logistics for vinyl manufacturing are no small task. So imagine how thrilled we were to discover that Bandcamp have come up with a solution where I can spend more time making music and you’re not left at the mercy of eBay scalpers for a record we couldn’t afford to press more of. It’s a beautiful thing and I hope you’ll get behind it. Now about this music…

I’ve often made my favorite things when I wasn’t overthinking things. This record came about over a period of time between things I may well have been overthinking. It’s fun to program drums that sound live and fake at the same time, to make synths sound like guitars and have guitars played by robots. My enjoyment of these processes became a complete sound with its own personality, one that needed its own name. I hope you’ll like it as much or at least nearly as much as I did making it.”

This new bandcamp crowdfunding option is just as exciting to us as another Amon Tobin release.  Pledge Music offers a similar service, but has had mixed results/reviews — I’ve even encountered some problems when ordering/pledging through them in the past.  For a while, Tobin‘s former label, Ninja Tune, ran a site/project titled Beat Delete which would crowd fund in a similar way, wherein once enough people supported a first time pressing or reissue, it would go into production, with a certain number of additional copies being made available.  That’s how classics like Blockhead‘s Music By Cavelight got a repress, although I missed out on grabbing it and it now goes for a good amount of money through resellers.  Speaking of the secondary market, you’ll notice that Tobin‘s blurb about the project mentions their intention of avoiding fans being at the mercy of “ebay scalpers,” due to limited stocks, and that releasing a record through this method will allow them to supply enough copies for everyone.  While they do limit it to one per person, they also have an option available for signed pressings, limited to only 50 copies, as well as 10 available signed test pressings.  So… I guess I’ll still see you on Discogs or ebay!!

The standard version comes on red vinyl.  Here’s the mock-up.

When I first clicked over to this campaign, there was less than $150 pledged at that point, but it didn’t take long for that number to multiply in a very short period of time.  What I’m saying is that, you’re probably going to want to head over there now, if you’re at all interested in one of the limited signed options, rather than continuing to read through all of my jibber jabber.  These will sell out.  Today.  You only receive your record if the campaign reaches its goal, of course, but… that will happen.  One more thing of note is that you’ll only get charged the full price once the campaign is funded, but you will be getting an immediate $7 charge for the digital release, with the remainder of the pledge coming through later.  As of now, the slated release date for the physical LP is September.
