No matter how you categorize it, from “low brow” to “pop surrealism,” the new contemporary art movement has only continued to grow worldwide, and well beyond the pages of publications like JUXTAPOZ Magazine and Hi-Fructose.  We’ve seen plenty of international artists rise within this genre to offer impressive styles and work that have gone on to influence the scene tremendously, but so often their work is exhibited within the United States and, more specifically, in locations like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York; cities that I still think of first and foremost in regards to the movement.

In 2003, one such artist, Jon Beinart, formed “an online community of strange and imaginative figurative artists” titled the beinArt Collective,  Initially operating as an online gallery featuring Jon alongside a small group of fellow Australian artists, it quickly expanded into a broader international network encompassing hundreds of artists from around the world.  From 2007 to 2012, he went on to publish several books, including works by such names as Kris Kuksi, Laurie Lipton, and Chet Zar, while continuing to curate group exhibits in both his homeland and the United States.  Then, in 2016, Jon finally opened the beinArt Gallery in Melbourne as a “curated space for highly skilled figurative artists with a shared fascination for strange and imaginative themes” that is dedicated to “showing internationally established artists with emerging talent” to help usher in the New Contemporary art movement into Australia.

This Saturday beinArt Gallery will host an opening for their latest installment of Small Works, a group exhibition bringing together over 70 international artists working in various mediums to produce more than 100 different contributions.  Some are gallery regulars, while others are exhibiting with beinArt for the first time.  Surprisingly enough, this show has a remarkable amount of references to both birth and death, with several babies showing up in pieces, while skulls appear in a number of others.  If you’re located in Melbourne, — and especially if you’re into that sort of thing — this is one to catch.  For the rest of us, it’s an excellent opportunity to begin keeping tabs on the gallery online, as well as to be introduced to several newer names on this list.  We’re excited to see how each of their futures unfold over time.
