With no particular frills, regularly scheduled celebrity guests, or even a consistently designated theme, the staying power of the podcast, Uhh Yeah Dude, rests solely on the shoulders of its two co-hosts, their abilities to expound upon and quickly interject life into whatever topics that they find themselves wrapped up in, and their undeniable rapport with one another.  Visually somewhat of an odd couple, Jonathan “JAH” Larroquette is a bearded, cigarette-smoking, longhaired, vegan that generally remains seated while sporting either worn-in T-shirts or tanktops, while Seth Romatelli is a clean-shaven character with a finely coiffed do (rockabilly light?) consistently standing and/or moving about in, typically Western-cut, collared button-ups.  If Larroquette‘s name sounds familiar, it’s because he is, in fact, the son of Emmy award-winning actor, JohnDanReinholdFieldingLarroquette of Night Court fame  He also made up 1/2 of the electronic duo JOGGER that was signed to DaedelusMagical Properties label, released an album back in 1999, and went on the Magical Properties tour with the electronic pioneer/label-head and Nosaj Thing back in 2010 (a tour that his dad tweeted about accompanying him on).  If Romatelli‘s name sounds familiar, it’s probably because you are already aware of the Uhh Yeah Dude podcast.  Either that, or you might be a huge fan of his bit part as a “talent organzier” in the Britney Spears vehicle Crossroads (2001) or as an obsessed celebrity memorabilia collector in the Hallmark made-for-tv movie, McBride: Anybody Here Murder Marty? (2005), starring his co-podcaster’s father a year before their hour-long web series was ever launched.

Whether it’s John‘s dad or Seth‘s appearance in a shitty teen film, neither Larrouquette or Romatelli shy away from their history, but that’s clearly not the basis of the program at all and, at the most, those topics might very rarely surface in the midst of their continuous banter.  What really carries the show are the hosts’ unrestrained social commentaries and back-and-forth between each other.  I never listened to that many podcasts in general, but I had always gotten the impression that they were hosted by “experts” in one field or another, or that “experts” were often brought in to weigh in on some subject matter.  What I immediately connected to when I first discovered UYD is that these guys don’t really claim to be experts in anything and they don’t feel the need to bring in outside guests to keep things interesting.  What they do, however, is make their listeners want to be involved in the topics themselves and, regardless of how absurd or trivial the subjects may technically be, they definitely get the mental cogs churning and conjure up some visually descriptive avenues while they explore them.

Originally inspired by the idea to begin recording their lengthy phone conversations with one another, Jonathan and Seth were early in the podcasting game, airing their first episode way back in February of 2006.  Since them, they’ve recorded over 575 episodes, influencing endless other hosts and programs that have gone on to find their own success in the field.  In fact, they have been repeatedly recognized by their peers for creating one of the very first comedy podcasts ever and, when the duo appeared as guests on episode #380 of Marc Maron‘s WTF podcast back in 2013Maron gave them their due as “pioneers, godfathers; one of the original podcasts.”  But accolades aside, the best way to truly gain an understanding of what the hosts refer to simply as “a weekly round up of America through the eyes of two American Americans,” is to experience them in action.  The good news is that I’ve provided one of my favorite clips of the program below, specifically for that purpose.  The even better news is that the duo will be returning to the Neptune Theatre in Seattle on Friday, May 19th to record a brand new live podcast and we’re giving away a free pair of tickets for the event to one of you  jokers.

  1. What was the excuse that Arnold used on Different Strokes to meet Muhammad Ali? Whatever that was is why I need these.

  2. I’ve been a devout UYD fan since 2008, I’ve listened to every episode sometimes more than once (ep 127). I started listening to them in the middle of a deep depression and I sincerely believe they helped bring me back. Help a broke girl see her two favorite dudes! Also, I’ve literally never won anything in my life so this would be extra cool.

    Make it fine with 49.
