ROBYN

City Arts Fest 2011

The Paramount Theatre

Seattle, Wa

10.20.11

Seeing Robyn at this year’s City Arts Fest was my first big pop concert.  I’m happy to have fulfilled this rite-of-passage;  never mind the fact I’m almost 30.  Actually, being almost 30 does relate to this story, because, as I age, the less tolerance I have for staying out late, fumbling through crowds, STANDING, and the general pack-in-as-much-as-you-can-handle model of music festivals.  EXHAUSTION =FUN?   But to see Robyn meant participating in this chaos-fest, so I bucked up, slammed a 24 oz Red Bull, packed a Snickers Charged, and practiced standing around and pushing through crowds a few weeks before the event.  Here is how it all went down: Read the rest of this entry →

“GOOD LUCK” (~a personal piece~) – BRIGHT EYES in Seattle [9.28.11]

September 30, 2011 in Music, Reviews

BRIGHT EYES

The Paramount Theatre

Seattle, Wa

9.28.11

I prepared for last night by reading about cultural rites of passage; the kinds of happenings where young men are taken into the jungle, given a spear, and aren’t allowed back into the village until they’ve claimed the life of the desired beast.  Or the Jewish bar mitzvah, in which the young man recites a portion of the Torah and, in exchange, gets to ride a chair over the heads of old people.  The goal of these events is to contrive a trial that forces the youth into finding the other side of the liminal state that is puberty.  These trials come at different times in different cultures.  In America, it’s common for them to not happen at all.  American youth are left to navigate the here-and-there of adulthood with little more trial than being required to sit maturely while their parents describe the sexy method of family-starting.  Tonight is a kind of rite of passage for me.

Its easy for me to feel like I’ve grown up alongside Connor Oberst, the lead man of the decade-stretching, tear-jerking, panty-swim that is Bright Eyes.  Although he has quite some years on me, the stages of his life are perfectly encapsulated in the band’s seven full-length albums.  Oberst was 25 years old when I first started listening to his records.  His manner of describing a specific moment so intimately that it felt like it happened to you a long time ago was astonishing.  Oberst was 27 years old when I sobbed all the way through Fevers and Mirrors, walking through the different rooms of my childhood home, before leaving them for the fair West Coast.  I listened to it again on the plane with my mom the next day, and repeated the experience.  In retrospect, it was kind of a cruel music choice on my part.  And then, Oberst was 31 years old last night, when he played what -according to his touring schedule and press releases- could have been his last American performance as “Bright Eyes , his call-name since 1995. WIN a Pair of Tickets to Wolfmother in Seattle (Friday 11.20.09)

November 16, 2009 in Music

wolfmother

Last I knew of Wolfmother, 2 of the 3 original members left and were touring as part of the new Kid Koala project, The Slew (highly recommended).  I assumed that was it for the band, however, shortly after seeing The Slew live, I began hearing the name Wolfmother again everywhere that I looked.  Apparently, frontman, Andrew Stockdale got himself a whole new rhythm section and busted out a whole new album.  The Cosmic Egg is already being well received and the new lineup/material seems to be garnering rave reviews, from fans and critics alike.  My mind’s been buzzing like a nitrous hit, with all the shit I’ve been dealing with, and in all honesty, I really don’t know what’s going on with the Australian rock revivalists.  Just because we haven’t listened to the new album and haven’t had an opportunity to form an opinion about their current incarnation, doesn’t mean that we can’t kick down a pair of tickets to one of you fans out there that desperately wants to experience their sonic onslaught live.  Shit, one thing that we are sure of is that these guys put on a high energy performance.  If you are already a fan of their music, they will definitely be worth seeing live in person, so…..

The Roots

April 9th, 2009

Paramount Theatre

Seattle

When I was growing up, it seemed as if only a few thing were always consistent.  One of those was my love for music.  Me and my brother would lock ourselves in our rooms for hours, going through albums from Jazz and Hip-Hop to Rock n’ Roll and Punk.  It didn’t matter what it was as long as it was captivating .  In one of those sessions I was introduced to the Roots crew, Philadelphia’s stetsasonic-style hip-hoppers.  At the time, the only other rap group that I was familiar with who were accompanied by instruments, in addition to their turntables, were the Beastie Boys.  I was already very fond of the New York trio, so I became an instant fan of The Roots, and was extra stoked when Dead C asked me to review their recent Seattle show at the Paramount Theatre.   It was a show that I would obviously need to take my big bro to.
