The Story Behind PHISH’s Festival 8 “BOREALIS” (lighted sky sculpture)

October 30, 2010 in art, Music, Technology, With Video

Last year, the Vermont 4-piece, PHISH triumphantly returned to the stage with a full tour, culminating in a 3-day extravaganza over Halloween weekend, entitled FESTIVAL 8.  The event was held at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, Ca, where the band played 8 total sets; including one acoustic set and one which featured them covering the Rolling Stones masterpiece Exile on Main St in its entirety, with the assistance of the remarkable Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.  It was an impressive weekend overall, but one thing that really stood out was a lighted sculpture that took flight and boggled the minds of many of us that were in attendance.  Being the inquisitive and science/astronomy/technology obsessed little gent that he is, our writer ONSEN took it upon himself to track down the creators of the structure and compile the intriguing and fascinating piece that we have presented below for you. Since it was originally written, the 3-dimensional FESTIVAL 8 film was released in theaters, offering many of you who weren’t in attendance at the actual festival to have the opportunity to get a glimpse of the crazy lighted device in action.  For whatever the reason (timing, sloth, misguidance, etc) this article never made it onto the site until now.  Tomorrow night, PHISH will be unveiling and performing another cover of another artists’ legendary work, in their typical Halloween tradition.  This time their performance will be held at the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall in NJ.  For everyone that’s there, we say, “have a great time, set something on fire for us, and don’t steal anybody else’s shit“.  Posting this article the day before Halloween may mean that we have waited and pushed this topic out right at the very last possible moments of relevance, but I hope that you will feel about it as I do.  This is an interesting piece, presented in a concise, informative, and entertaining fashion by a friend of ours who put in a lot of extra work to bring some fascinating information to light, and it still reads as such.  To you, I say thanks for reading it.  To ONSEN, I say, thanks for writing it.  And to everyone… sorry it took so long.

“Mom, Can I be a Rape Meme This Year?” : Antoine Dodson Halloween Costume

September 26, 2010 in Global Destruction, Movies / Television, Music, PSA, The Web, With Video

Every year there seems to be at least one ridiculously alarming Halloween costume being pushed on the public. Last year we featured a post about Walmart offering a plastic surgery costume and marketing a birth-defect themed ensemble for the children. Of course there are always the “clever” outfits that are restricted to current events each year, as well. Such topical targets have included figures like Sarah Palin or that wacked-out Ashley Todd dame who falsified a politically-motivated assault/robbery claim with the accusation that someone carved a backwards “B” for Obama onto her face (printable Ashley Todd Halloween Mask HERE). This year we’ll probably see some Bristol Palin costumes and a few of Bethany Storro, the Vancouver, Wa woman who falsified an assault claim that someone doused her face in acid (drain cleaner Bethany Storro costume available HERE). There have always been costumes ideas like this over the years, but with the internet age and sites like Youtube giving birth to instant “celebrities” and consistently spreading memes all over the place like electronic venereal diseases, a whole new level of vacuous undeserved hype has been created; making each 15 minute span of fame more potent than ever in history. In less than a week, it will be October, which means that Halloween is sneaking up on us again like a calculating rapist climbing through windows in the Alabama projects. Don’t worry folks, this year a site called Brandsonsale.com is microwaving and reheating the iron before it completely cools off, by offering a costume based on, none other than, internet super-meme Antoine Dodson. DEAD MAN’S BONES “Pa Pa Power” mini-film (feat. art by Joshua Allen Harris)

September 2, 2010 in art, Global Destruction, Movies / Television, Music, Reviews, With Video

We first began receiving emails about Dead Man’s Bones less than a week into the beginning of last year.  The first contact included a video and an mp3 link for a song called, “In the Room Where You Sleep“.  There was also some information surrounding the project, but it was very minimal and extremely general.  We were simply informed that the included content revolved around a “collaboration between a new band called Dead Man’s Bones and the Silverlake Conservatory of Music Children’s choir” and that they would be releasing an upcoming record which was “conceptual in nature“.  What wasn’t mentioned and wouldn’t be addressed directly until an email several months later , was that one of the key players in the group is actually quite recognizable in another area of the entertainment industry.  Moments into the video, however, it was clear that the man sitting behind the piano and singing was none other then ex-Mousekateer, Ryan Gosling.  What’s even worse was that, no matter how much I didn’t want it to be true, I knew that I actually liked it.

Gosling‘s identity wasn’t necessarily kept a “secret” but it wasn’t shoved out into the forefront for the marketing campaign either (a-la Juliette and the Licks or when the sub-mediocre actor Keanu Reeves became the unimpressive bass player for the incredibly shitty Dogstar.)  It didn’t matter either way; this time the music was good.  The real test is that whenever I’ve played Dead Man’s Bones around people, without first informing them of who’s behind it , they seem to take an immediate interest.  The reverse is definitely not the case.  I’ve, somewhat recently, gone back to taking on work as a barista and have thrown it on a few times in the cafe.  I’d almost completely forgotten about the album, until a customer mentioned seeing their show in Seattle last year.  I understand the stigma surrounding a Ryan Gosling-fueled musical effort and I have to admit that, although I had a positive view of the album, I believe that some level of superficiality may have played a part with me not throwing it into more of a rotation since it’s release last October.  Just as I was starting to rediscover the work for myself again and wondering about the current state of the project, two new updates/announcements were released.  The first was a slot performing as part of a solid lineup at this weekend’s FYF FEST in Los Angeles.  The second was a nearly 13 minute video for one of the album’s standout tracks, “Pa Pa Power“. Hitler learns the Halloween Phish Album For Festival 8 [VIDEO]

October 8, 2009 in Comedy, Global Destruction, Movies / Television, Music, The Web, With Video

YouTube Preview Image

I just saw this video and actually laughed out loud over it.  I was in the middle of dealing with another post, but I had to drop everything to get this up here now, because:

(A) It’s relevancy is time specific

and

(2) I think people need to see it.

You may have seen the other similar versions of this video with different subtitles related to gaming, football, or even Michael Jackson.  It’s become a growing meme recently, but I feel that this PHISH-related video is still done particularly well.  If you’re curious about the original source footage, it was taken from a 2004 German-Austrian film titled Der Untergang (aka: Downfall).

If you’re feeling left in the dark, you can always check out a couple of our other Festival 8 related posts:

WALMART Offers Child Halloween Costumes of Birth Defects & Plastic Surgery

Walmart-Parasitic-Twin-order

I was just sent a Google instant message from our writer M. Hersted asking, “can you explain this costume to me? i have no idea what it is representing“  Along with his inquiry was a link to Walmart.com, which included the screen shot above.

The obvious first move in my investigation was to enlarge the product image and see what I could deduce from it.

Since I’m fairly positive that it’s not supposed to be a DEVO Booji Boy costume, I was at a loss.  Upon closer inspection, I noticed the dotted lines and arrows on the chest.  Along with the little medical booties, I made the conclusion that the segmented blue lines were supposed to represent pre-surgical markings and that the costume was supposed to simulate the body of a plastic surgery patient.  Still…. something wasn’t adding up. [Scroll to the bottom for recent Updates as they arrive]

Earlier this year, PHISH posted an animated flash map, which sent their fanbase on an apeshit crazy hunt to figure out the location of the 3-Day Halloween Festival.  The location was finally disclosed as the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, CA but, although it is a major detail, it is only one of multiple questions that has been answered, regarding the festivities.  Slowly more and more information is being released.  The official schedule is up, which involves the bands first ever all-acoustic set (donuts and coffee provided).  The main question that’s been racking everyone’s brain, however, is what PHISH will be playing for their Halloween set.  Now another new interactive, flash animation feature is slowly providing that information as well.
