Win an Authentic It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia DICKTOWEL!

January 15, 2010 in Comedy, Global Destruction, Movies / Television

CONTEST HAS ENDED!

If you’re a die hard fan of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, then you probably already know about the Dick Towel by now.  If you read our November 6th post about the novelty drying devices, then you also know that the Sunny crew actually manufactured the product and constructed an official site to sell and distribute them.  In that post we mentioned that the towel would have made a wonderful Christmas or Hannukah present, but followed it up by asking, “As far as Kwanza?…..TERRIBLE!  Where is all of the dark meat?!

Well, it looks like the folks at Dick Towel are all ears when it comes to concerns as dire as those regarding racial sensitivity in the mock phallus industry.  Beyond just adding hats and T-Shirts to their line of Dick Towel related merchandise, we’d like to present you with their latest addition……

…………. “THE BLACK DICK TOWEL”!

Finally!  This should please a lot of people, except for this guy of course [poor bastard].

The really good news is, in celebration of their latest wang cloth, the people at Dicktowel.com have offered to provide us with a couple of FREE Dick Towels to give away.  This means that we will be picking 2 winners (one for each color).

MAD DECENT Stimulus Package : Free SOUTH RAKKUS CREW album Download

January 6, 2010 in Music, The Web

If you agree with Time Magazine and the T-Shirts that DJ Shadow made available on his official website, the 2-Thousand-Oughts made up the “WORST DECADE EVER“.  Fortunately for us, the first week of this new year has already began to show itself as promising, at least in the realm of music.

Towards the end of the last decade, artists like M.I.A. and Santigold began to garner more widespread notoriety, along with producers Diplo and Switch, who have both worked with each of the vocalists.  2009 also marked a collaborative effort by Switch and Diplo, under the collective alias of “Major Lazer“, a cartoonic Jamaican zombie fighter with a laser-cannon for an arm and sporting military fatigues.  The project yielded Guns Don’t Kill People….Lazers Do, a dancehall album chock full of aggressive beats and endless cameos.  Today Diplo and his Mad Decent label have decided to keep the momentum rolling into the New Year and have provided a free full-length album download by the South Rawkkas Crew. Free Amon Tobin “Live in Brussels” & Two Fingers Downloads

October 10, 2009 in Music, The Web

amontobin

Along with the likes of Squarepusher, Amon Tobin was one of the first artists to give me hope for post-Kraftwerk electronic music and to really open my mind to the genre as a whole.  Being urrounded by ‘90s house and a plethora of clueless, wing nut, suburban candy ravers, instilled a prejudice in me that was hard to shake.  I’d been dragged to raves with monotonous, redundant beats and watched geeked-out teens gawking slack-jawed as some goon twirled glow-sticks in their faces.  Fortunately, I was able to slip out to a Q-bert or Afrika Bambaataa set but, overall, it was not working for me.  I had never realized the potential for live one-man electronica until I finally saw Tobin perform.  It wasn’t just about a laptop and some swirling shapes being projected across a screen.  During his sets, he actually puts on a show; constantly working and reworking every track to death and only moving onto the next one after he’s wrung it dry of every possibility.

Two years ago, the electronic pioneer released his sixth studio album, Foley Room.  With a continued focus on exploring new individual territory, Tobin used the project to venture into the realm of HollywoodFoley” sound effects artists.  The incorporation of found sounds (tiger growls, hornets in a foil, electric toothbrush on a banjo, etc) and contributions by, string masters, Kronos Quartet, made for a eerily beautiful  industrial landscapes.  [For anyone that doesn't own the release, I suggest picking up the cd/dvd, which features video footage of Tobin collecting the field recordings]  Following the release, Amon set out on a meticulously orchestrated tour to promote it.  Last November, the  ambient wizard released Live in Brussels, an audio documentation of one of these live performances.  The album was provided in full-length, as a free download on Amontobin.com.  When visiting the site today, I realized a few things.  The first was that we never covered anything  regarding the Live in Brussels download, when it was released.  The second, and most important, thing was that it is still available on the site and can still be downloaded for free right now. KEXP Brings Free Summer Concert Series Back to Seattle

July 27, 2009 in Global Destruction, Music

concerts at the mural

In my youth, Seattle was a pretty great place for community events.  Bumbershoot use to have great musical acts and only cost about $7, although I would sneak in every year anyway.  This year, Bumbershoot is $50 a day and has terrible headliners like Katy Perry, The Black Eyed Peas, and Sheryl Crowe.  The only thing that I even care about missing is Os Mutantes.  Why should it cost more now than it did in a year like 2001, when the lineup included WEEN, Built To Spill, Mos Def, David Cross, Daniel Johnston, Critters Buggin, Dj Logic, Sex Mob, Cat Power, King Sunny Ade, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Taj Mahal, and Sam Bush?  The answer is because corporate elements have slipped in and raped everything out here.  Even the free events like the Rhythm Festival and Folk Life have had their community gatherings tweaked by the man.  Perhaps the one thing that I miss the most out here has been Pain in The Grass, a free weekly, summer concert series that used to be held at Seattle Center‘s Mural Amphitheatre.  Fortunately for us, two local radio stations are doing their part to bring it back.  One of them is resurrecting tradition to do it right, while the other is grasping on to the Pain in the Grass name, in an attempt to use nostalgia to fuck you in the ass. Kept Like A Secret [Free Built to Spill Show @ UW w/Ra Ra Riot]

June 4, 2009 in Music, Reviews

bts-ra-ra-riot-uw-posterThe sun finally arrived in Seattle.  On Friday, May 29th, I was laying on my couch, most likely in my drawls, and staring, head tilted, at my computer screen.  Neck sweat was accumulating under my beard; grimy and thick, like it was mixed with fruit pectin.  Nothing was happening, and it was the nicest day of the year.  I was still procrastinating about filling out my unemployment paper work when I received an email from our writer, Onsen, telling me about a free show at UW, only a few hours later.  Generally, I wouldn’t be too interested, however, the headliners were supposed to be Built To Spill.

I was skeptical at first, but it seemed to look legit.  The lineup would start with a local band, Smile Brigade, who would be followed by Ra Ra Riot and then, BTS.  I sent a text about the show to anyone that I thought would be interested, jumped in the shower, charged up my camera, and headed out with my girlfriend.  The bus never showed up and, about 45 minutes later, we finally reached Seattle’s University District.  After eating a giant gyro, I headed in to the Upper Playground to talk to the manager, Jen, and let her know about the free event.  No one that I informed about the show had heard anything about it and I was beginning to to wonder if this thing was even really going down.  If it was, I didn’t have any idea about what the set up would be.  There was a possibility that the performance was solely open to UW students and faculty.  If that was true, it also meant that there would be a very likely possibility that I was going to be jumping a fence and/or being chased by security.  I smoke too much and can’t run as fast, but I was set on getting in.  I saw MOS DEF at the UW‘s HUB building 10 years ago and got into to that one by transferring a UV stamp off of some random girls wrist.
