CITY ARTS FEST (Day 1)

Belle and Sebastian

Benaroya Hall

Seattle, Wa

October 20, 2010

I was twee when twee wasn’t cool…sometimes it’s good to be old” – {Facebook post from my best girlfriend Maria, via her Paris flat, in response to learning that  I would be attending the Belle and Sebastian performance for City Arts Fest 2010}

I was seriously excited, but not a little bit apprehensive about attending this show alone on a Wednesday evening.  Exhausted after a night of insomnia followed by a long day of office work; I knew I would be getting up at five to go to work the next day.  I was just praying that the sweet vocal harmonies wouldn’t lull me to sleep.  “Don’t let me miss the whole thing, asleep in  a cozy Symphony House chair”  I told myself.

Belle and Sebastian is a longstanding favorite in my music collection, but this is the music I do other things by.  I wash the dishes to it, take road trips to it, and ride the bus to it.  It’s one of my five year old’s go tos for singing along in the car (Her eyes half closed as she harmonizes from the back seat.).  Belle and Sebastian was on my wedding-mix, my baby-birthing-mix, and was the soundtrack to my deep deep days as a painting student at University.  I never considered going to see them alone in my 30’s, but going pensive and solo would have been just the thing I might have done in earlier years. [WATCH] GORILLAZ entire 45 minute “Live on Letterman” performance!

October 11, 2010 in art, Movies / Television, Music, Technology, With Video

2010 marks 12 years since Blur frontman, Damon Albarn and cartoonist, Jamie Hewelitt (Tank Girl) first teamed up to create their world famous “virtual band” Gorillaz.  Since then, the animated music project has gone through various changes, lineup and otherwise.  Albarn has remained the only consistent musical contributor to the group, with the projects self-titled debut incorporating the talents of Del The Funky Homosapien and producer, Dan the Automator, of which Damon had collaborated previously on the Deltron 3030 album.  2005 brought the sophomore release Demon Days, featuring appearance by such artists as De La Soul, MF Doom, and Dennis Hopper with production work by Danger Mouse.  The incorporation of fictional animated characters with the reality of the live musicians who’ve created them and rotating guest musicians has been a lofty concept since day one and has forced the group to make numerous adjustments in a variety of areas since their inception.

Over the years there has been repeated talk about making an animated film, but that was eventually abandoned, then pursued temporarily, and then abandoned all over again.  Around the time of DEMON DAYS, the duo took on a larger-than-life venture, attempting to perform “live” shows with 3-dimensional holographic versions of the characters/band members that they’d created.  Their abilities to manifest these visual-centric performances were first demonstrated at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Novemeber of 2005, with a follow up performance at the 2006 Grammy‘s, which included an aging Madonna writhing in a leotard.  They announced plans to embark on a full-blown holographic world tour in 2007 – 2008 but, due to cost issues and the unreliability of the technology, that entire idea was eventually bagged.  In fact, by 2006, Albarn announced his intention to scrap the entire idea of Gorillaz as a  functional “band” altogether.  With the help of Terry Gilliam (Monty Python, Brasil, 12 Monkees, etc), the idea for a movie had resurfaced again, with Albarn focusing on that film as the primary vessel for the Gorillaz project.   “As far as being in a big band and putting pop music out there, it’s finished.” He Stated, “We won’t be doing that any more” (Uncut Magazine, Nov. ’06).  Of course, the animated film idea was scrapped yet again and the group did, in fact, release another pop album for the masses this year.  Now Gorillaz has even taken to the road to begin promoting the release but, after over a decade-plus of ups and downs, left turns, and the creators themselves losing interest, should we even be paying attention to this generally, overly-ambitious project at all anymore.  Based on their recent Oct. 7th appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman and the following 45 min. multi-media performance that they treated the audience to [featured below], the answer to that question is a resounding “probably.” Read the rest of this entry →

They’ll Be Here Soon : PHOSPHORESCENT in Seattle w/live video (July 31, 2010)

September 10, 2010 in Music, With Video

On Friday July 30th, SPIRITUALIZED played their classic album Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating in Space in it’s entirety at the legendary Radio City Music Hall in New York City.  I wasn’t there.  By the next morning, I had finally accepted that fact and reluctantly headed off to the much less exciting activity of pouring high grade espresso drinks for the people.  I had imagined that, through one ridiculous miracle or another, I would make it out to New York City in time, but the world often has its own mangled vision for your life.  How does that joke go, again?  “How do you make God laugh?  Make a Plan.“  As fate would have it, I wound up meeting someone who lives in the Big Apple that day and getting the opportunity to catch a performance by a band that I’d been meaning to check out for quite some time. Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers

Chateau Ste Michelle Winery

Woodinville, Wa

June 19th, 2010

Steve Martin Banjo Tour,” were sweeter words ever put together?  Turns out, some things might be better in my “Wild & Crazy” Imagination.” Last month, I was lucky enough to get tickets to see the legendary comedian/banjoist perform with North Carolina‘s Steep Canyon Rangers; part of the Chateau Ste. Michelle winery’s annual summer concert series. I was thrilled at the opportunity. But –now– I kinda feel like a “jerk.” I was, unfortunately, just a little let down by the whole Steve Martin banjo experience… and, now I am putting it out there for the whole world to see.  The following is my totally neurotic review of the whole experience.

QUASI – [DAY THREE] : Sasquatch Music Festival [Mon. May 31, 2010]

June 27, 2010 in Music, Reviews, With Video

The Coleman 2-person had turned into an EZ-Bake and I woke up cooking again.  My face felt like sand had been dumped in to shrink it and I had a crazy bump on the middle knuckle on my right hand.  No big deal… but Kim was convinced that it was some sort of bug bite that needed to be tended to, so I let her whip out her little first-aid kit and try to sanitize it or whatever she wanted to do.  I was in this same campground 12 years ago, high on acid, and eating marinated chicken out of the same silver cooking bowl as a Rottweiler, so I’m clearly not as concerned about shit like Purel and antiseptics.  I had a positive outlook about the final day and a really simple game plan: “Enjoy Myself.”  No more drama.  No more bullshit.  I felt like I was adjusted to the format and the pacing of everything by this point and the lineup for the day was solid.  Tonight would be the WEEN set and I was so happy drinking my coffee and thinking about it, that I hadn’t even noticed when Kim squeezed some crazy 1/2 inch stinger out of my knuckle. Enter Now: ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA Seattle ticket Giveaway!

June 8, 2010 in Music

GIVEAWAY HAS ENDED!

We love Frank Zappa… a lot. This also means that we take it seriously when someone decides to cover his music. We are sure that his son Dweezil loves him too… a lot, but that doesn’t mean that he’s capable of covering his father’s work and doing it justice. When I heard about the Zappa Play Zappa project that Dweezil has embarked on, in which he tours with a group of hand picked musicians to cover his father’s music live, I was incredibly skeptical.  However, after speaking to some of the biggest, most hard-assed, and critical Zappa fans that I know, every response that I’ve heard has been incredibly positive.   It sound like this kid has taken this project as seriously as anyone could have ever hoped and that the resulting effort is beyond what could have ever been expected.  When Zappa Plays Zappa makes it’s way to Seattle on Monday June 14th with a performance at the Moore Theater, it will be our first opportunity to catch this critically acclaimed tour for ourselves and see if it lives up to the hype. T he good news for you is that, we’ve teamed up with the Seattle Theatre Group yet again, to offer that same opportunity to some of our readers, for free!

Our friends at STG Presents have offered us 20 pairs of tickets to give away!   Yep, that’s 40 total, and were’ not fucking around.  This is no joke my friends.  In fact, it looks like we will probably have even more than that, when it’s all said and done, so pay attention to the rules and act quick if you’re interested.   If you do this right the first time we shouldn’t have any problems.

HOW TO ENTER

We’re doing this shit real simple like. Read the rest of this entry →
