WIN SOME DEPECHE MODE SHIT! : New DVD/CD set “Tour of The Universe”

November 10, 2010 in Music

CONTEST HAS ENDED!

If you thought that the members of Depeche Mode were dead, you were wrong.  Dead wrong… but they probably should be (not mentioning the facts that front man, Dave Gahan has made it through heroin addiction, a suicide attempt, a speedball overdose, and a heart attack).  Now pushing 50, the members of the most successful electronic band in history embarked on a beyond strenuous 102 show tour in 40 countries, beginning in May of 2009 and wrapping it up this February.  Yeah, 102 shows… and that’s still with 17 of them being canceled due to Gahan suffering from a contraction of gastroenteritis and having a tumor removed from his bladder.  After selling over 100 million albums, the first of which was released 30yrs ago, Gahan, Martin Gore, and Alex Fletcher have earned more than enough money, fans, and success to retire comfortably… so why haven’t they?  I think that the answer to that question is equal parts “because they don’t have to” and “because they just can’t bring themselves to do it“.  They’ve been doing this thing since they were mere teenagers and their fanbase remains astronomical.  In fact, they are still playing venues like Madison Square Garden and selling out arenas worldwide (Rolling Stones-level shit).  What isn’t entirely “astronomical” was the tour itself; misleadingly titled, “Tour of the Universe“, when they never actually left the planet even once!

Now the documentation of the Depeche Mode Tour of the Universe has been released on DVD/CD formats and we’re offering youz bastards a chance to win a prize pack.  Peep out the details about the release below and/or scroll to the bottom to find out how to enter. Read the rest of this entry →

Soundtrack to SPIKE JONZE’S “I’M HERE” Gets Official Release

August 15, 2010 in Movies / Television, Music, Technology, The Web

Back in March, we posted a review about the Spike Jonze-created short film, “I’m Here“.  The project, which is provided for free of charge on it’s own specially designed website, focuses on the love connection between a pair of robots, inhabiting some alternate version of Los Angeles.  Of course, there are underlying elements in the film which are much deeper than that.  The complexities of love, self-worth, social hierarchies, risk, trust, and even life itself are all explored throughout its half hour running time.

After reviewing the film we got a few comments, all relating to the soundtrack which accompanied the piece.  For those who haven’t read that last article about the project, the following excerpt should bring you a little more up to speed on the subject. Read the rest of this entry →

Sufjan Stevens Films Something Concrete : “The BQE” Reviewed

October 5, 2009 in art, Global Destruction, Movies / Television, Music, Reviews

Multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, Sufjan Stevens earned his most notable success through 2005‘s Illinois album.  The 22-song ode to the Prairie State launched both Stevens and his “50 States Project” into the public eye.  In 2006, he followed it up with The Avalanche: Outtakes and Extras from the Illinois Album and a 5-disc box set of Christmas music but, since then, the releases have pretty much ceased.  There’s a strange conflict created in the logic of many of Sufjan‘s fans because, although they want to hear a “new” project from him, they are also focused around what the next installment of the last (50 States) project is gonna be.  People would often prefer to buy the same album over and over again than risk having an artist grow in a direction that is uncomfortable for them to deal with.  For anyone with logic and reasoning skills, it’s clear that Stevens will never write an album for each of the 50 states, unless technology and/or his work ethic changes drastically.  I don’t think that the artist’s intentions or claims are dishonest but, even by churning out an album every year, it would still take him until the age of 82 to finish the project.  Music aside, I am acquiring a growing respect for Sufjan‘s approach to the creative process, which involves healthy doses of patience, a virtue that I have trouble possessing.  His focus seems to be more about the process than the result and, whether or not you enjoy those results, his dedication and sincerity is undeniably commendable.  He seems to be content with investing as much time to create, or even re-structure, a project until it’s just the way he had envisioned.  In fact, October 6th marks the release of Run Rabbit Run, a reworking of his 2001 Chinese Zodiac-themed, electronic album Enjoy Your Rabbit; this time, with all string instruments.

Recently, I had the opportunity to view one of Steven‘s most ambitious projects yet.  In usual Sufjan fashion, The BQE is based around a very specific theme; The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.  Like the 50 states Project, it’s geography based, and the music is completely instrumental, like that of Enjoy Your Rabbit.  There is one aspect that puts The BQE in stark contrast from any of his previous work, however, and that’s the fact that it’s also a film. NEW Har Mar Superstar Video (ft. Eva Mendez) & Dark Touches pre-order

September 30, 2009 in Music, With Video

lf you’ve seen and/or been following our post updates about the Har Mar Superstar viral videos, then this new music video and track is going to seem familiar to you.  This first hit to drop official-style, with a video and the whole can of Pringles, is called “Tall Boy“.  As it has been mentioned repeatedly over the last few months, by us and many others, the song was originally written for Britney Spears and, subsequently, rejected by her “people”.  It’s too bad that she wasn’t able to, at least, make a small cameo because, visually, this is definitely her steez.

Seeing this mini-film finally ties each of the teasers together, which all appear to have been pulled from and created during this video shoot.  Just like the teasers, the “Tall Boy” video features appearances by Eric Wareheim, Alia Shawkat and Eva Mendes.  Push the fucking play button and check it out fools!  Then scroll to the bottom and read on, because I’m hopped up on pork sandwiches and TWIX and I want to bark some more orders at you.

Daniel iPhone game site logo

I just wanted to throw up a quick post to alert everyone to a new Daniel Johnston project that was just released.  That’s right a “NEW” project.  I know that many of you are familiar with Johnston, but may have thought that his career was on hold.  If so, your assumptions couldn’t be further from the truth.  Besides continued touring and having a solo exhibit of his art currently featured on DirtyPilot.comDaniel will also be releasing a brand new album on October 6th.  For the upcoming Is and Always Was, Johnston teamed up with Jason Falkner to create his first album of all new material in 6 years.  Yes, yes…. this is all very exciting, but this post isn’t really intended to be a focus on any of this; it’s actually about something much more unexpected…. a Daniel Johnston video game. WEENing The CAT’S: WEEN Live “At The Cat’s Cradle” CD/DVD

December 16, 2008 in Global Destruction, Movies / Television, Music, Reviews

WEEN’s latest offering is the sixth live recording that the duo has released since 1999. “AT THE CAT’S CRADLE, 1992” is a juicy nugget of Ween goodness which, features an audio disc of a 21 song live show, recorded at The Cat’s Cradle in Chapel Hill, NC, as well as a 21 track bonus DVD.  It’s just Dean, Gene, and  a Yamaha Digital Audio Tape Deck and is charged with all the energy, chaos, and, apparently opium, that you would expect from classic Ween. I think it was a great idea for them to release this, and the DVD was a lot of fun to watch. Read the rest of this entry →
