DUNGEN

DUNGEN guitarist, Reine Fiske came out to begin moving equipment and was followed shortly by Mattias and drummer, Johan Holmegard.  Since DUNGEN‘s inception, Gustav Ejstes has been the primary force behind everything; arranging, writing, and manning the majority of the instruments on all 6 of his albums.  Fiske has been a major contributor since the first release and, in recent years, Ejstes has been able to reduce nearly all of his drum work by passing duties over to Holmegard.  Regardless of the quartet having solidified as much more of a formal “band” these days, Ejstes still performs a total of 8 different instruments on their brand new release, Skit i Allt (meaning: “Fuck All”) and continues to switch it up a bit in the live format.  Prior to making his entrance, a small upright piano was brought out and placed on the stage for the vocalist.  Yep… the setup was beginning to give me a bit of a flashback to last year and this was a good thing.  We tried to hype the fuck out of this performance and, although the crowd wasn’t at the capacity that these skilled musicians warranted, I could easily locate individuals whom I personally made the suggestion to.  Now it was DUNGEN‘s turn to make good on the promises that I had made for them. FUCK ALL! (pt. 1) : DUNGEN & THE ENTRANCE BAND in Seattle [10.3.10]

October 14, 2010 in Music, Reviews

This October is a busy month here in SeattleThe Black Keys just played on the 2nd, M.I.A will be here on Oct. 17th, Steven Wright is on the 20th, Trailer Park Boys perform again on the 26th, the city hosts shows by both Sufjan Stevens and Ryuichi Sakamoto on the 30th, then there’s the City Arts Fest (Roky Erickson, Cat Power, DJ Spooky, John Medeski, Gogol Bordello, Big Boi, The Vaselines, etc. etc) from the 20th-23rd, and Gary Numan performing on Halloween.   And those are just the few events that I can name off of the top of my head.  At a quick glance, I’d love to see everything but, in reality, that isn’t even remotely realistic.  There is almost TOO MUCH shit going on and, believe it or not, I’ve found myself getting burned out on even going to a lot of shows these days.  I can get super hyped on something but, as the date approaches, the sun begins to go down and, if we don’t already have something officially arranged for coverage, it becomes really easy to blow it off and go in an easier direction.  It’s not usually being at a show that is overkill but, if it’s been an especially draining day or week, getting up and traveling there can be enough of a pain in the ass to feel like “work”.  Maybe I’ve already seen them and feel like I can let it go until “next time”.  Maybe I convince myself that it won’t be that amazing or I’m just too busy writing about/editing the show that I went to the day before.  However, when I discovered that DUNGEN would be returning for an October 2nd show at Neumos again, there was no question that I would be getting off of my lazy ass and making the trek to see them again.  There was even a free Del the Funky Homosapien show a mere few blocks away from my home but, the last time that I saw the Swedish quartet live, they damn near blew the cap off of my skull with their unique brand of psych-folk/jazz-prog. STEVE MARTIN : “October Tour Ideas Leaked”

October 4, 2010 in Comedy, Music, The Web

Those of you familiar with Steve Martin‘s early career may remember his incorporation of the banjo in his routine.  Those of you who have continued to follow the legendary comedian closely up until this point, will know that Martin is one of the top banjoists in the game these days and has even embarked on multiple blue-grass tours, where’s he has continued to showcase his wielding of the instrument with proficiency.  Those who aren’t familiar with Steve Martin at all, are welcome to get the fuck off of my website immediately and return once you have acknowledged his genius through films like The Jerk, one of the best comedy films that has been or will ever be created.

A recent post regarding Martin‘s current banjo tour was posted on his official site, which continues to blend his love of performing musically with his comedic wit.   Here are the contents of that post, entitled “OCTOBER TOUR IDEAS LEAKEDRead the rest of this entry →

They’ll Be Here Soon : PHOSPHORESCENT in Seattle w/live video (July 31, 2010)

September 10, 2010 in Music, With Video

On Friday July 30th, SPIRITUALIZED played their classic album Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating in Space in it’s entirety at the legendary Radio City Music Hall in New York City.  I wasn’t there.  By the next morning, I had finally accepted that fact and reluctantly headed off to the much less exciting activity of pouring high grade espresso drinks for the people.  I had imagined that, through one ridiculous miracle or another, I would make it out to New York City in time, but the world often has its own mangled vision for your life.  How does that joke go, again?  “How do you make God laugh?  Make a Plan.“  As fate would have it, I wound up meeting someone who lives in the Big Apple that day and getting the opportunity to catch a performance by a band that I’d been meaning to check out for quite some time. DEAD MAN’S BONES “Pa Pa Power” mini-film (feat. art by Joshua Allen Harris)

September 2, 2010 in art, Global Destruction, Movies / Television, Music, Reviews, With Video

We first began receiving emails about Dead Man’s Bones less than a week into the beginning of last year.  The first contact included a video and an mp3 link for a song called, “In the Room Where You Sleep“.  There was also some information surrounding the project, but it was very minimal and extremely general.  We were simply informed that the included content revolved around a “collaboration between a new band called Dead Man’s Bones and the Silverlake Conservatory of Music Children’s choir” and that they would be releasing an upcoming record which was “conceptual in nature“.  What wasn’t mentioned and wouldn’t be addressed directly until an email several months later , was that one of the key players in the group is actually quite recognizable in another area of the entertainment industry.  Moments into the video, however, it was clear that the man sitting behind the piano and singing was none other then ex-Mousekateer, Ryan Gosling.  What’s even worse was that, no matter how much I didn’t want it to be true, I knew that I actually liked it.

Gosling‘s identity wasn’t necessarily kept a “secret” but it wasn’t shoved out into the forefront for the marketing campaign either (a-la Juliette and the Licks or when the sub-mediocre actor Keanu Reeves became the unimpressive bass player for the incredibly shitty Dogstar.)  It didn’t matter either way; this time the music was good.  The real test is that whenever I’ve played Dead Man’s Bones around people, without first informing them of who’s behind it , they seem to take an immediate interest.  The reverse is definitely not the case.  I’ve, somewhat recently, gone back to taking on work as a barista and have thrown it on a few times in the cafe.  I’d almost completely forgotten about the album, until a customer mentioned seeing their show in Seattle last year.  I understand the stigma surrounding a Ryan Gosling-fueled musical effort and I have to admit that, although I had a positive view of the album, I believe that some level of superficiality may have played a part with me not throwing it into more of a rotation since it’s release last October.  Just as I was starting to rediscover the work for myself again and wondering about the current state of the project, two new updates/announcements were released.  The first was a slot performing as part of a solid lineup at this weekend’s FYF FEST in Los Angeles.  The second was a nearly 13 minute video for one of the album’s standout tracks, “Pa Pa Power“.
