Bubble-stage-reach

We’ve put up two recent Flaming Lips-related articles lately, but I just came across something that I felt was interesting enough to post and extend this accidental theme a little while longer.  If you are a fan of The Lips, you probably know all about the giant space bubble that Wayne Coyne uses to roll across the top of the audience, like a hamster ball.  For those of you who always wondered about what the front-man is actually experiencing from within his protective layer, there’s now a video that can help to provide you with that perspective. PHISH Updates: Festival 8 info/site & “Joy” cover art/release date/track list

PHISH-Festival-8

So now that all of the ridiculous map bullshit is over and people can finally sleep without wondering if they have to cancel their plans or if they should have never canceled them in the first place, PHISH and their fans, who got sucked into the brilliantly deployed marketing scheme, are finally able to get down to business.   The band has created a website for their latest festival and have broken down the details that so many have been anxiously awaiting.  The boys have also released new information regarding an alternate release date and track list for for their upcoming album ” JOY“, as well as the cover art.  I’m tired of writing about this shit, so I’m gonna just let the press release do all of the talking for me. Where the PHUCK is it Already?! [PHISH's Halloween Festival] {w/Poll}

July 18, 2009 in Global Destruction, Music, PSA, The Web

Please enable Javascript and Flash to view this Flash video.For the better part of a month, an adobe flash map has been going apeshit on PHISH.com and the phans are going even crazier.  Nothing else has been announced beyond what the image implies: [There will be a 3-Day Festival from Oct. 30-Nov. 1]  “But where is the festival being held?” you ask?   That’s exactly the point; nobody seems to know for sure.  One or more of the states are slowly being blacked out on the map at a time, usually in some elaborate fashion.  Some ways in which they have been removed are: a pinball ricocheting around and smacking into them, a lawnmower or segway(?) passing over, devoured by fire ants, and, sometimes, the States just blow the fuck up like an Al Qaeda attack.  People are checking in daily like the map was a goddamn Christmas advent calendar filled with chocolates.  No other band but PHISH could pull something like this off.  They blow a shit ton of money on a festival, don’t even announce what portion of the country it will be located in, and they still have people going Harriet the Spy on this bitch and scouring the virtual globe, like Carmen San Diego just hopped a cessna after kidnapping their only child.  The thing about them is that, although they are being cocky as fuck with it, they always back it up and the PHISH Halloween shows have become legendary. Gently Smiling Jaws: Gene Ween at the Crocodile [Seattle]

June 29, 2009 in Music, Reviews, With Video

Gener-ShadowOn the 19th, I was fortunate enough to catch a rare solo acoustic performances by AaronGene WeenFreeman.  Over the last week or so, I’ve simply been going through the photographs that I took and digesting the whole experience.  The Seattle show was the last of only 4 that Gener was doing for his June, mini-tour down the West CoastFreeman is, of course, one of two founding members of the group WEEN; the other being MickeyDean WeenMelchiondo.  I’m not going to waste too much of my time by going into their extensive background all over again.  If you’re not hip to WEEN yet, then your ass needs to get hip.  We here at MonsterFresh love the WEEN, as evidenced by the multiple posts that we’ve all ready written about them, and we’re always eager to cover any new project that the guys are working on.

Melchiondo is well known for his side-work with the group Moistboyz and, bassist, Dave Dreiwitz is involved with multiple other projects.  Freeman, on the other hand, has often seemed less eager to venture out beyond his work with the band.  Toward the end of last year, however, Gener began to do just that, by playing various shows with his recently formed Gene Ween Band {You may have read the review by our writer A.Misalatti, who we sent to cover the new 4-piece‘s performance in Brooklyn back in February}.  Since the group didn’t come out West for any of the dates, and since I haven’t been to a WEEN show since their last Seattle show in 2007, I was pretty psyched when the West Coast dates were announced. Tonight PHISH played their first ever show at Fenway Park in Boston (aka: Phenway).  We caught the Brooklyn shows about 5 years ago, which were held at a the Brooklyn Cyclones‘ Single-A baseball stadium, but, this time around, it seems like a whole other animal.  Reviews are already coming in and the word is that they are officially back on their game.

Speaking of game, there was an extremely heavy baseball vibe to go along with the venue.  The photo of the tickets above was taken by our writer Dr. J., who attended the show.  Mail order PHISH Tickets always have a special twist on them but these are definitely some of the most unique that I’ve ever seen.

We have already posted the set-list as well as sendspace links to downloads of each set of the show.  Below is also live video footage of the guys playing “Ocelot” [a brand new track] as well as “The Ballad of Curtis Loew“, which they haven’t  played in 624 shows (Aug. 2, 1993 The Ritz Theatre, Ybor City, FL). The Roots

April 9th, 2009

Paramount Theatre

Seattle

When I was growing up, it seemed as if only a few thing were always consistent.  One of those was my love for music.  Me and my brother would lock ourselves in our rooms for hours, going through albums from Jazz and Hip-Hop to Rock n’ Roll and Punk.  It didn’t matter what it was as long as it was captivating .  In one of those sessions I was introduced to the Roots crew, Philadelphia’s stetsasonic-style hip-hoppers.  At the time, the only other rap group that I was familiar with who were accompanied by instruments, in addition to their turntables, were the Beastie Boys.  I was already very fond of the New York trio, so I became an instant fan of The Roots, and was extra stoked when Dead C asked me to review their recent Seattle show at the Paramount Theatre.   It was a show that I would obviously need to take my big bro to.
