Dean Ween Group Releases Cover of Jimmy Webb’s “Galveston” For Hurricane Relief

Ween guitarist, Mickey Melchiondo and his group offer up new tune in hopes of raising money to benefit those devastated by Hurricane Harry in Texas

Ween guitarist, Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo has maintained a fairly accessible presence, not only online, but in person, if you happen to catch him at the right time/location.  Leading up to the New Hope, Pennsylvania quintet’s reunion shows last year, Mickey was temporarily running a U Stream channel where he’d regularly interact with fans through the chat feature, as well as on Facebook.  He also consistently performs weekly as part of ” The Invitational!” held on Wednesday nights at local New Hope staple, John And Peters, where Ween originally cut their teeth back in the day, while honing their craft.  These live jam sessions at the bar seemed to play an integral role when putting together his debut with The Dean Ween Group last year, with a rotating cast of stellar musicians sitting in with him, including legendary P-Funk guitarist, Michael Hampton.  Now Deaner is reaching out and giving back to his fans that have been struck by the recent devastation of Hurricane Harry by offering up a track for a compilation to raise money for assistance efforts.  He’s also asking those who are financially able to help donate to a fund set up by the Ween Appreciation Society Facebook group.  The announcement comes via The Dean Ween Group‘s own official Facebook page.  The full statement, along with the band’s musical contribution — a cover of the 1969 Jimmy Webb tune “Galveston” — can be viewed below.

I just wrote a long and detailed post and stupid Facebook deleted it for some reason, so I’m going to try this again and save the text this time. This is our recording (from last night) of “Galveston”. It’s going to be included on a benefit album for Gulf Coast victims of the recent hurricane, of which I have many friends. We in NJ have been through this before and it is indescribable. without the support of other’s we would have been in very serious trouble. Even Gov. Christie showed that he truly cared, I saw him at every town hall meeting, obviously exhausted—but the volunteers poured in from across the country to help us rebuild. some of my friends are still displaced though, 4 years later. The fantastic people at the Ween Appreciation Society helped begin a fundraiser that has so far raised close to $5k dollars. Since I was the first artist to submit a track for this album I don’t have many details to share yet, except I ask that in the meantime you donate to our site. The track and video are below. Please share EVERYWHERE!
