2017 marks 30 years since Marc Maron first embarked on his long career as a standup comedian and throughout that time, there have been countless ups and downs.  For 3 decades, Maron has honed his craft, paying his dues, writing, taking a stab at the occasional short-lived TV program, and continuing to pound away at the stand up circuit, before ever obtaining any genuine long-standing success in this business.  He owes a great deal to those struggles and experiences, because they are what provide him with the unique perspective and voice, the potency and the depth that fuel his current work.  Always a more auto-biographical and personal standup by nature, recent years have really shown Maron finding his calling through a classic format merged with a more modern day medium.

These days, most people may know Marc from his critically acclaimed WTF? podcast, which he first started back in 2009, after the dissolution of his Air America webcast, Breakroom Live with Maron & Seder.  Birthed out of a low point in his career, it quickly became his greatest professional triumph.  Still operating out of his garage, the groundbreaking twice-weekly podcast features in-depth, revealing, and personal interviews with fellow standups –- often his friends — such as the late Greg Giraldo, Eugene Mirman, Doug Stanhope, Norm Macdonald, Patton Oswalt, David Cross, and Zach Galifiankis, but has extended to include other folks in the entertainment industry like writer/producer/directors Judd Apatow and Kevin Smith; musicians, Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman, Fiona Apple, J mascis, and Andrew WK; actors, John Hamm (Mad Men) and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad); This American Life radio host, Ira Glass; and even Barack Obama.  Since it’s inception, WTF? has regularly been positioned as the #1 podcast on iTunes, has been short-listed on various high profile top podcast lists, won Comedy Central‘s 2012 comedy podcast of the year award, and within it’s first 4 years, had already pulled in more than 53 million downloads.  In 2014, Slate magazine even rated his 2010 interview with Louis CK as the #1 podcast episode of all time. Additionally, Marc‘s own scripted television series, Maron, based on his own life running the podcast, ran for 4 seasons on IFC, with its finale coming in July of last year.

On March 25th, Marc Maron will return to Seattle‘s as part of his current “The Too Real Tour.” and, thanks to our friends at the Seattle Theatre Group, we’re giving one of you a pair of tickets to catch him live at the Moore Theatre.  To win a pair of tickets, just leave a comment below.  Otherwise, you can purchase tickets through THIS LINK.

  1. I’ve never had the opportunity to see Maron do standup, but as one of the few people who actually enjoyed Air America radio (Chuck D? With a radio show?! Childhood dream fulfilled), he’s been in my ears for a long time now. Most fascinating to me is his ongoing internal battle surrounding the success of his peers. Strange and wonderful guy.
