I saw Björk perform live… once.  The year was 1995 and the concert was a benefit for Jampac, an anti-censorship organization founded by Nirvana‘s Krist Novacelic.  Also on the bill were Novacelic‘s band, Sweet 75Sky Cries Mary, Afghan Whigs, and an early performance by Foo Fighters, among others.  But, perhaps, the craziest thing about the entire show was that, in lieu of a band, the Icelandic songstress was actually backed by none other than pioneering electronic mastermind, Aphex Twin.  The venue was about as glamorous as a school gymnasium, but even with her stripped down setup, it’s still a performance that has stuck with me almost 20 years later, and it’s a good thing, since I’ve yet to get an opportunity to catch her again.

Since then, Björk has continued to ramp things up, both sonically and aesthetically.  She’s collaborated with artists as varied as Death Grips, Antony Hegarty, Mike Patton, Thom Yorke, and Rahzel, and even enlisted electronic duo, Matmos, to work on her Verspertine album and accompany her live on the tour supporting the release.   It’s true that Miss Guðmundsdóttir is one of those rare individuals that not only possesses an unparalleled gift, but also continues to get more and more impressive with age, but unfortunately for us in the Pacific Northwest, she doesn’t exactly come through the area too regularly.

Despite all that Björk has accomplished throughout her lengthy and remarkably successful career, her most recent Biophilia tour is an elaborate multi-media presentation that is said to have blown everything else out of the water.  Luckily for us, it was far too amazing not to be documented and transformed into a mind-blowing cinematic experience for the rest of us who weren’t able to attend it in person, and a new perspective for those that were.  On Saturday November 1st, the Seattle Theatre Group is screening the new film Björk: Biophilia Live at Neptune Theatre along with the related short documentary, When Björk Met Attenborough preceding it.  Better yet, they’ve offered us a free pair of tickets to giveaway to one of you.

Björk: Biophilia Live:

Biophilia Live is a concert film by Nick Fenton and Peter Strickland that captures the human element of Björk’s multi-disciplinary multimedia project: Biophilia. Recorded live at Björk’s show at London’s Alexandra Palace in 2013, the film features Björk and her band performing every song on ‘Biophilia’ and more using a broad variety of instruments – some digital, some traditional and some completely unclassifiable. The film has already been hailed as ” a captivating record of an artist in full command of her idiosyncratic powers” (variety) and ” an imaginative stand-alone artwork” (hollywood reporter) and is a vital piece of the grand mosaic that is ‘Biophilia.’ Directed by Nick Fenton and Peter Strickland. UK. 2014. 97 mins.

When Björk Met Attenborough:

originally screened in the uk last summer on channel 4, ‘when björk met attenborough’ is a one hour long documentary which follows björk and attenborough as they investigate and discuss the connection which exists between music and nature. narrated by tilda swinton and inspired by björk’s technological project biophilia, which attenborough provided a spoken introduction for, the film is a unique encounter between two of the most iconic thinkers of our time. 2014. 47 mins.

  1. My favorite is still her debut album, you know the one, titled Debut. With her cute sweater and tears brimming in her eyes. “Venus as a Boy” will forever make me happy. And “Big Time Sensuality” is a fantastic fantasy to aspire to….maybe in my old age? Yeah, I hear “it” just gets better and better. Ah well, I can live vicariously through music.
    So those tickets….
    I want ’em.
