- Vampire Weekend Tix + The Palms LV Suite + $1000 Diesel Shopping Spree – The Palms Vampire Weekend Diesel Flyaway Sweepstakes!

September 17, 2010 in Music

Those of you who have read my less than enthusiastic review about Vampire Weekend after the Sasquatch Musical Festival will probably be wondering, “What the fuck is Monster Fresh doing with a Vampire Weekend contest on their site!?“  The answer to that question is fairly simple: They are solid live performers and, although I don’t personally have my teeth firmly locked around the New York quartet’s preppy meat shafts (like a lot of outlets), that doesn’t mean that we’re completely oblivious to the fact that they are talented musicians with a huge fanbase.  Plus, if you knew anything about us, then you know that we put free loot above most things.  Furthermore, there’s a lot more to this contest than a simple pair of concert tickets being offered.  Even if you are some kind of unfathomable dipshit/maniac who hates music, this contest is still definitely worth entering.  In fact, it’s a pretty amazing giveaway and we are honored to have the opportunity to help provide you with the opportunity to cash in on it. Mr. Bill Murray – Group Art Exhibit @ the R&R Gallery L.A. (Preview)

September 13, 2010 in art, Comedy, Movies / Television

At the beginning of last year, artist Tim Doyle released his 6″ x 36″ print entitled “Murray Times Six” through his Natomi Inc website.  The 6 panel silk screen, which depicted various eras of Bill Murray‘s acting career, was decidedly fairly awesome.  The piece garnered a decent amount of attention and sold out quickly; spreading from art sites to film sites and prompting Doyle to print multiple additions.  As surprising as it may have been to come across a Bill Murray print at first, it still beckoned the question of why the subject hadn’t been explored more before.  Not only did the popularity of the work add a little spark to Doyle‘s career, but it was also a clear testament to the popularity of Murray himself.  This week, Los AngelesR&R gallery is stepping up to the plate with an entire gallery exhibit dedicated to one of the world’s most beloved actors and, with 50-plus pieces of new original work and an open bar, it sets out to be one art opening that is not to be missed. They’ll Be Here Soon : PHOSPHORESCENT in Seattle w/live video (July 31, 2010)

September 10, 2010 in Music, With Video

On Friday July 30th, SPIRITUALIZED played their classic album Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating in Space in it’s entirety at the legendary Radio City Music Hall in New York City.  I wasn’t there.  By the next morning, I had finally accepted that fact and reluctantly headed off to the much less exciting activity of pouring high grade espresso drinks for the people.  I had imagined that, through one ridiculous miracle or another, I would make it out to New York City in time, but the world often has its own mangled vision for your life.  How does that joke go, again?  “How do you make God laugh?  Make a Plan.“  As fate would have it, I wound up meeting someone who lives in the Big Apple that day and getting the opportunity to catch a performance by a band that I’d been meaning to check out for quite some time. FREDDIE GIBBS “Oil Money” – feat. BUN B and DAN AUERBACH (The Black Keys)

September 9, 2010 in Music, With Video

Freddie Gibbs‘ stock continues to rise with his latest video “Oil Money” off of the recently dropped Str8 Killa EP.  We’ve written about the Gary, Indiana-native before and, even more specifically, about the Str8 Killa EP, but it’s hard not to repeatedly address the rapper’s work when the updates continue to be this intriguing.  Our first post about Gibbs featured a live video of his performance during the SXSW music festival earlier this year.  Just prior to that, we also posted a clip of The Black Keys performing at the same festival.  Now, with the release of “Oil Money“, we have a chance too hear what Gibbs and Black Keys guitarist/vocalist, Dan Auerbach sound like on the same track.  For anyone familiar with BlackRoc, last year’s collaboration between The Black Keys and Rocafella records, Auerbach‘s latest foray into the rap world will be far less surprising.  In fact, the blues rock duo of Auerbach and partner, Patrick Carney actually produced some of the most refreshing hip-hop beats in years.  A similar soulfulness is definitely exhibited through the keys and in Auerbach‘s vocal work on this latest Gangsta Gibbs offering.  While The Black Keys‘ frontman prominently appears on the chorus for “Oil Money“, he doesn’t physically appear in it’s video.  The following video does, however, feature appearances by Chip Tha Ripper, producer/rapper Chuck Inglish of The Cool Kids, and long-time Freddie Gibbs influence, Bun B from the Houston‘s legendary UGK crew. BITTERSUITE : Chilly Gonzales video/movie clip (feat. Peaches & Tiga)

September 5, 2010 in Movies / Television, Music, With Video

These days, artists don’t get much more prolific than Paris-based performer JasonChilly GonzalesBeck .  Unfortunately, they don’t get much more criminally overlooked either.  Hopefully you read our review of the musician/producer’s performance with Andrew W.K. last February, as part of his month long “Piano Talk” residency at Joes Pub in NY (other nights included A-Trak, Sia, & Princess Superstar).  This was not their first public encounter, with Gonzales successfully challenging and defeating Andrew in a piano duel at the exact same venue on Sept. 25, 2009.  Earlier that May, the “Entertainist” further established his piano skills in Paris, France by breaking the “world record for the longest solo-artist performance” (27 hours, 3 minutes and 44 seconds).  Further accolades include a Juno award and an Grammy nomination.  Although most U.S. residents do not know Gonzales by name, the majority should be familiar with at least some of the work that he is behind.  You know that new iPad commercial that is accompanied by that infectious little piano jam?  That song is called “Never Stop” and, along with a separate rap version, appears on Chilly‘s upcoming full-length, Ivory Tower.  He is a frequent collaborator with fellow Canadian-born, European superstar transplants, Peaches and Feist.  In fact, Gonzales is responsible for performing on PeachesI Feel Cream (2009) and co-writing half of the songs on the release.  He also co-wrote/produced 2 tracks from Feist‘s The Reminder and played piano, organs, vibraphone, and drums on the album, after offering similar contributions to her 2004 effort Let It Die.  Now that Ivory Tower‘s Sept. 14th U.S. release is quickly approaching, it appears that creating a simple album isn’t enough for the self-proclaimed “President of the Berlin Underground“/”Jewish Supervillain MC“.  Instead, Ivory Tower is also the title of a feature-length film that is co-written/produced/starring Gonzales and features acting performances by Peaches, Feist, and fellow Montreal-native/collaborator, Tiga. SQUAREPUSHER presents SHOBALEADER ONE – “d’Demonstrator”

September 3, 2010 in Global Destruction, Music, Technology, With Video

Tom Jenkinson (aka: SQUAREPUSHER) is the type of rare artist that I can’t imagine doing anything else except for working at his craft.  What I mean by that isn’t that I couldn’t see him having any other occupation because he is destined to give birth to some of the best electronic music ever and that it is his calling… blah, blah, blah, etc, etc.  What I mean is that I can’t imagine him doing ANYTHING else, as in going to the grocery store or playing boardgames at a dinner party with lifelong chums in his living room.  His sonic creations are so elaborate, complex, and multi-dimensional that they often splinter into so many directions at once that the listener’s mind has no other option but to do the same.  Separate corridors and paths open and close; platforms lift, raise and disintegrate.  No one else is better at actually providing depth, layering, and a visual element to their music; seemingly creating something tangible and solid from simple audio.  No one is better at making music that has the potential to physically give me an anxiety attack either, which is why my girlfriend hates it so much when I want to play it.  Over the last decade and a half, the Englishman has twisted and mutated sound into so many varying directions that his only limitation appears to be his own imagination.  His proficiency is ridiculous and his delivery suggests an obsession with perfection.  This is why I have difficulty imagining him in any other element than in one of methodical experimentation, constant restructuring, and focus.  I imagine that even when he’s making a sandwich, his mind is off trying to work out some ridiculous algorithm and, after he puts the bread away and the cheese back in the crisper, he immediately returns to his dungeon, eating with one hand and tweaking knobs with the other.  He’s always appeared to me as some sort of crazy reclusive electro-alchemist, hibernating simultaneously in a futuristic lab and in a Medieval basement.  Both hermitic and hermetic, residing in a hybrid yurt/hovercraft.  As evidenced by the promotional image/album cover (above), Jenkinson’s latest project, SHOBALEADER ONE, is doing very little to dispel such outlandish suppositions of this character as a futuristic cyber-jazz druid.
