Swede ‘N Lo-Fi : DUNGEN & WOODS in Seattle (9.3.09)

September 17, 2009 in Music, Reviews

Gustav-acousticI used to work the graveyard shift as a night auditor at a pair of shitty hotels, across the street from a crack park in downtown Seattle.  I was eventually, and intentionally, fired but, like most shitty jobs, this one had some Pros mixed in with its Cons. The pros were the comical wingnuts and crackheads, the fact that I met my girlfriend there, my free pizza hook ups every night, and that it was not uncommon for patrons to kick me down free weed.  Among the cons were the not-so comical wingnuts and crackheads, my incompetent and self-important dipshit of a boss (who was over-compensating for his secretive, yet discovered, history for having a taste for man wiener), that I was constantly scheduled as a security guard (not my “job”), and the time that the vato with the dress shirt and neck tattoo tricked me into smoking a sherm blunt with him at 3 in the morning.  The most frustrating situations were the ones where the Cons actually canceled out the Pros all together. One example was when I had learned that the Swedish psych band, DUNGEN, was staying in the hotel and had offered the entire staff free tickets to their local performance.  Sure, it was a “sweet” bonus for having a shitty job, but the problem was that I was actually working at that shitty job during DUNGEN‘s performance.  It would take almost 4 more years before I realized to what magnitude I had missed out. Paper Monster - Whatever She Likes

I don’t know what the fuck has changed lately, but I’ve been receiving a lot of emails with requests for me to post shit on the site.  Help has been few and far between, so I’ve been getting backed up and don’t generally have time to check out someone’s myspace tracks or research some random bullshit that isn’t already on my radar.  I do like receiving the requests, however, but far too many of these emails show clear evidence that the senders have absolutely no idea about Monster Fresh or about the type of material that we would even be interested in posting anyway.  Nothing against anyone because, in thruth, we just don’t have the manpower right now and I haven’t even had an opportunity to look over most of the stuff.  Who knows?  Maybe there was actually an original idea hidden in there somewhere but, if you think that I give a fuck about the new David Gray release,  then you are obliviously mistaken.

The other day I received yet another email from a stranger with a project, but this was different.  Something in the message caught my interest immediately and prompted me to delve further.  Now, I am only recommending the same of you.  Take a moment from from what you’re doing, refocus your attention, and deposit these two terms into your memory bank:
1)PaperMonster” and 2)Dirty Pilot“.

“Kanye Doesn’t Care About Taylor” shirt : Hydro74 X Tee Fury

September 15, 2009 in art, Music, The Web

Kanye Doesn't Car About Taylor print

So this Kanye West shit has gone from zero to meme at an alarming rate.  It’s unavoidable and it looks like we’ve already seen our first piece of merchandise coming in from the site Tee Fury.  Actually, “memorabilia” is probably a better term to use for this product, because much like their slogan “Tee Today, Gone Tomorrow” implies, they only post a product for 24hrs and, after that, it’s curtains.

Kanye Doesn't Care about Taylor

The following is VIA Tee Fury

About this shirt: Teefury is 2 Fast 2 Furyous! Something hits a chord in the media, we can react lightning fast like Usain Bolt to give our community a forum on which they can discuss it, and maybe even snag a shirt that evocates their exact feeling on the matter. Don’t worry, Kanye isn’t going to be changing anytime soon, so as long as he’s alive, the shirt will be pertinent for All Time.

I felt that the shirt was legit enough to post here, because it is actually a creation by artist Hydro74.  Here’s what he had to say about the design on his official website blog:

Twitter vs Kanye vs. Teefury

Right after the VMA’s, I posted on twitter a funny (faux) shirt idea I had for the fun of it via the Kanye vs Swift awkwardness. Yeah, it was just that weird.  So instead of letting some cheesy pop culture label rip it and post it on Karmaloop, Teefury requested it, and what they request, I give.

This piece is not your standard Hydro74 styled art, but none-the-less it’s just social commentary that was oddly awesome, and can now get, for one day only for $9.  It will be gone tonight at midnight.

Check it out and embrace the teal shutter shades for only $9 from a great little company: Kanye Doesn’t Care About Taylor

*Also. I do respect Kanye’s talent and creative license.  But…

That’s right, this shit will only be up until midnight Eastern time, which is only 9pm Pacific time. So if you want to pick one up, you better hit up Tee Fury now, or just let it go. If cash is an issue, don’t worry.  It’s only $9 and shipping is cheap as fuck (only $2).  Either way, please make sure to check out Hydro74‘s other work graphic work.

Two-Bit Technology Turned 8-Bit Magic: Very Important Pixels by Kristof Saelen

Directors Pixels

Tarantino, David Lynch, George Lucas, Kubrick, Spielberg, Hitchcock, Tim Burton.

You’re probably thinking at least 2 things right now: “Woah, these are pretty awesome!” and “No shit, asshole!  I figured out who they were, all by my-fucking-self.”

Movie Directors” is part of an ongoing project called Very Important Pixels, created by Kristof Saelen, a Belgian designer and web developer.  The most remarkable thing about his work is the fact that, if you are up on your pop-culture, each character is so incredibly recognizable.  Saelen‘s work becomes more and more impressive to me, the more that I look at it.  The slight touch of his work is mind-blowing, especially considering that, if Kubrick’s eyes weren’t tweaked with that delicate splash of crazy just right, he could have easily come off as a young Francis Ford Coppola.

This is the most recent work (Sept. 7th) but, based on the dates that the various posts were made, it appears that the first group of images were of Michael Jackson, in various stages of his life. Read the rest of this entry →

It has already been 5 years since SeanHar Mar SuperstarTillmann released The Handler, his last full-length album.   The Har Mar persona has picked up steam in places like the United Kingdom, where Tillmann has even become a product/commercial spokesperson, but, for the most part, the artist has shelved his character to pursue other interests.  He’s been involved in numerous other musical projects, short films, and has even popped in with a Hollywood cameo here and there [Starsky and Hutch].  This coming October, the hiatus officially ends with Tillmann‘s latest Har Mar R&B Dance release, Dark Touches. Letter to Kanye West in Response to Fucking with Taylor Swift + PINK Talks Shit

Dear Kanye,

It’s about time for someone to point out your shortcomings as a lyricist.  You really don’t flow that adequately, sir.  Your beats are all straight unaltered samples, your cadence is weak, and you shouldn’t believe your own hype.  I’m actually pissed that I have to post something about you on my website but, in all honesty, this is my obligatory traffic generating move [I have to do that now and then].  You should check out the work of beat miners like Madlib and DJ Shadow or legends like DJ Premier.  Lyrically, you may want to look towards artists such as KRS-1 or GZA.  Do something original.  I liked you for about 12 minutes after your “George Bush doesn’t care about black people speech”, but that’s only because I didn’t realize that it was just foreshadowing more wingnut statements in the future.  Putting the kibosh on a fucking Taylor Swift speech?  That’s pretty STREET.  Why don’t you go challenge the Jonas Brothers to a “You Got Served”-style dance battle in a city park?  Taylor Swift is a Pop-Star… I get it.  She performed with Def Leppard and allowed them to disgrace themselves…. I get it.  The problem is that you are a Pop-Star too, but YOU don’t seem to get it.  It’s important to realize that both of you share, pretty much, the same fanbase of suburban tweens and guys who sport faux-hawks and blazers over their Ed Hardy T-Shirt.   Oh yeah, and I had the same slatted plastic glasses and mullet when I was 7 years old and living in Fresno.  Please refrain from biting my misguided, pre-teen attempts at style in the future.

Signed,

I thought that it was sad before but… fuckin’ christ man

I’d further like to add that, if you want to venture into a head to head rap challenge, where we could each write verses and post them in our respective blogs, I’m more than ’bout it. You may assume that I’m more of a “blogger” than a rapper, but I happen to hold a similar impression about you. Read the rest of this entry →
