The Japanese art of U-Min: Animatronic Breakdancing

March 24, 2009 in Notes From Japan, PSA, Technology, The Web, With Video

woominEveryone knows that spaceships are really time machines and that aliens are clearly future humans changed through evolution stemming from a post-apocalyptic world.  The words “Asian” and “Alien” are strikingly similar and, with their advanced technology, along with the following footage, I finally feel that it’s safe to publicly assume that the Japanese race was originally sent back in time thousands of years ago to shape our technological futures and to create the ultimate dance machines.

U-Min (aka: Woomin) was a dance crew from Japan who’s name means “unknown”.  They have a strong foundation working with popping, the robot, and an “animation” dance style.  From my understanding, 2 of the members (pictured) had left the group to start a crew called U-Min No Kokoro (meaning “core” or “soul” of U-Min) but, last year, they appeared collectively in Missy Elliott’s ‘”Ching-A-Ling‘” video from the film Step Up 2: The Streets. Although the video features the crew dressed in homage to the Baseball Furies gang from the film The Warriors, it didn’t truly showcase what the crew was capable of.  I saw a video of them over a year ago, where they were performing on stage and it blew my mind.  I had planned to post it, but never got around to it.  Tonight I stumbled across another video from the group that triggered by memory; both are posted here.  Leave a comment and tell us what you think.  If you have any more info on the crew, feel free to drop that info here as well.

thanks,

Mix-Tape Mixed-Media: Art of Erika Iris Simmons

March 24, 2009 in art, Music, The Web

dylan-tape1It still constantly amazes me how the internet age continues to alter every aspect of our everyday lives as a society.  Not only does it affect the way that we shop, learn, and communicate, but this media has also bled into every other form of media to influence how they operate.  Sites like Hulu bring the television to your computer moniters and Youtube has already worked to launch the careers and notoriety of musicians and created celebrities out of random family home videos and of teenagers fucking around.  There is nothing that I have witnessed in recent years which epitomizes these concepts more than the artwork of Georgia artist, Erika Iris Simmons.

Over the last week, I have seen the artwork from Simmons (aka: iri5) popping up in quite a few places.  I first came across an image through stumbleupon when I landed on a site called TechnabobTechnabob originally found out about it through a post on Neatorama and today, when I went to the website for Juxtapoz magazine, I found out even more about the artist when they decided to post something on her as well.  Believe it or not, all of this hype was originally created through simple posts of her artwork on the artists flickr page.  From there, her name has started to slingshot around like a pinball, picking up steam and enlarging the snowball along the way.  I felt that if I have started to notice it, then it will only be a matter of time before others do so, I figured it’s time for us to step in and help give this beast a push of our own. This video has only received 12 hits on Youtube so far.  It finally and officially confirms the West Coast dates that everyone has been waiting on for PHISH‘s latest reunion tour.  Obviously, this announcement isn’t delivered in a manner that was quite as exciting as the last one which featured sky writing jets or the Hampton painting, but some of the news definitely is news worthy.

Thug Lot Mug Shots: Mad Fools Get Arrested @ Phish Hampton Shows

March 11, 2009 in Global Destruction, Music, Politics, PSA, The Web

phish-kid-tweek-eyes-mug-shot

The title of this post pretty much explains it all.  Of course, if the recent Phish reunion shows were held on the West Coast, I would have titled it “Hella fools get arrested…”  Thousands of excited concert goers arrive in Hampton, VA to see their favorite 4-piece throw down the crazy funk jams that they’ve been dreaming of for the last 5 years, only to be fucked with imercifully by the local Po-Po.  You may have heard about this on various websites or even on your local TV news, but I’m calling bullshit on many of these reports and the operation as a whole. I’m also going to tell you exactly why. Read the rest of this entry →
